Common excuses and lies
we tell ourselves to not quit smoking

Time to “GET REAL”
To be Genuinely Empowered by the Truth (GET), you have to get Honest about the Reasons, Excuses, And Lies (REAL).

This was something Dad would often say to me, which I used as an excuse to justify my smoking behaviour. It’s true that we are all going to die one day, but that excuse was denying me of a quality of life that I deserved.

The truth is that no one really enjoys breathing hot smoke into their lungs. I smoked habitually after a meal, but what I enjoyed was my desert…. getting my nicotine fix. It’s another great hypocrisy and loop, because smoking caused my cravings, but then also relieved my cravings. If smoking is that enjoyable, why not share some with your children?

I do know that many highly intelligent people smoke cigarettes, often believing that they cannot cope without them. These days people who are incarcerated don’t have the option to smoke, but generally speaking they cope just fine. After their release from prison, the majority once again chose to fill their body up with hot smoke and poisonous chemicals.

The truth is that swearing, spitting and biting my fingernails were bad habits. In order to stop smoking, I had to got honest about the fact that nicotine is not a bad habit, but rather a stinking, rotten addiction that took so much from me and gave me nothing.

The truth is that I didn’t give anything up. I Quit smoking and have gained so very, very much. My previous attempts to quit smoking were unsuccessful, partly because I spent too much time in the grief process. I was angry like I’d lost my best friend or my dog had died. I would bargain with the idea of smoking for weeks, until eventually I would submit to the addiction. We will explore the grief process later on in this book, so keep reading!

It’s true that I could continue smoking and possibly live till I’m over 70. I quit smoking when I was 41 yrs and I’m now 57. I’ve played competitive soccer for the last 10 years and hope to continue till I’m well into my 60’s. I’m looking forward to a quality retirement filled with love, laughter, action and adventure. Whereas my Dad spent the final years of his life in a wheel chair with numerous debilitating health issues due to smoking.
